Malfunkshun returns with screening of Andy Wood documentary

Friday night a piece of Seattle music history will be celebrated at Hard Rock Seattle when the documentary Malfunkshun: The Andrew Wood Story is screened.

For those unfamiliar, Malfunkshun is the 1980s pre-grunge band started by brothers Kevin and Andy Wood, the latter of which went on to be the frontman for Mother Love Bone. Andy Wood died of a drug overdose in 1990 and some members of MLB went on to form a band you may know called Pearl Jam.

Malfunkshun recently resurfaced for a brief set during the Brad and Friends show at Showbox at the Market. The same show saw all the members of Mother Love Bone reunite on stage to perform a three-song set with Shawn Smith of Brad/Satchel/Pigeonhed on vocals.

The film is a look into Andy Wood’s life and it includes live Malfunkshun footage, interviews with grunge figures including Chris Cornell, Stone Gossard (who Kevin Wood called “Stoney” during our interview which is something that made the inner Pearl Jam fan in me giggle) and other details about Wood and his impact on local music. Malfunkshun: The Andy Wood Story is expected to be released by Universal Pictures in October along with a CD of Malfunkshun material called Monument. Copies of Monument will be available for purchase at the screening.

Tickets for the screening and show cost $30 and tickets for just the performance cost $15. The doors are at 6:30p.m. and the film begins at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a Q&A after the film. You can purchase tickets here.

All Hail the Crown, Kevin Wood’s new band (which features Smith on vocals), will be performing after the screening of the film. He will also be performing at the show as a part of Malfunkshun, which will include a guest vocalist.

I interviewed Kevin Wood last week he talked about his brother’s legacy, All Hail the Crown, working with director Scott Barbour and his experience at the Brad and Friends show.
