Band Crush: Fergus & Geronimo

Fergus & Geronimo are oddball pop at it’s best, experimental without being TOO weird, jangly and lo-fi and sprawling. Pitchfork gushed about their CMJ performance, and as a native Texan with a lot of music-geek Texas friends, I’ve been hearing quite a bit about this basement band (which originally hails from Denton, Texas) by way of the ear-to-ear gossip train. Equally at home on your car stereo as you whip along the desolate Texas highways or live, in a crowded sweaty shoebox venue packed with swooped-bang hipsters and hungry, frothing bloggers, Fergus & Geronimo are sure to win you over one brilliant track at a time.

Currently Brooklyn-based, the band has finally turned some musical heads outside of the Lonestar state. After releasing several 7”s on different labels, including Tic Tac Totally, Woodsist, and Trasparent, and endearing small town folks in Denton with their energetic, shambling, pop-laden sound, the ever-astute lads and ladies over at Sub Pop Records imprint Hardly Art have taken notice.

Fergus & Geronimo’s debut long player Unlearn will be released via Hardly Art on Jan 18th and on Oct 26 of this year they released a new 7” with two non-album tracks, “Never Satisfied” and their uber-catchy cover of the 80s Pac Man novelty non-hit “Turning Blue.” You can stream songs from the 7” here and the tasty “Girls with English Accents” track here.

About Shrie Spangler

Shrie is a true Texan taking a break from the sticky weather and even stickier conservatives while livin' it up here in Seattle. She crafts like the wind and fancies herself a web writer and blogger. You can usually find her at the dog park with her pit bull/catahoula Leopard dog mix and her Chesapeake Bay Retirever/husky mix, at super divey blue collar karaoke bars or loitering on her Columbia City street with the uber-friendly neighbors. Oh yeah... and she really digs writing about independent music.
