THEESatisfaction signs to Sub Pop

According to various sources the women who are the black weirdos of THEESatisfaction have inked a deal with Sub Pop Records (kudos to Matson for casually dropping the news into a blog post).

The duo of Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White have been on the radar of local music writers for a few years now and their psychedelic hip-hop jams  fit right in with Sub Pop’s signing of Shabazz Palaces. They are the third local signing for Sub Pop within the last year (the Head and the Heart are the other) and hopefully the label’s recent string of local signings signals a new focus on the talent that is in their backyards.

But what makes this interesting in my eyes isn’t the recent emphasis on local (although that is pretty damn cool), it’s that THEESastifaction are a hip-hop group and are only the third hip-hop group Sub Pop has signed in its 23-year existence. I’m sure Sub Pop will always be interested in signing acts with rock and pop-oriented music but it makes me wonder whether the label might be making a slight shift into urban music. I’m sure like always the Sub Pop suits are just signing musicians who make good music that they want to work with and that it’s a coincidence that THEESat make hip-hop music, but that was one of the first questions I had when I heard the news.

If you are unfamiliar with THEESatisfaction check out their Amplified bio video below that was a part of MTV’s $5 Cover: Seattle.

Your next chance to see THEESatisfaction is during their performamce with labelmates Shabazz Palaces at Neumos Feb. 17.
