Watch: Brent Amaker’s amazing Depeche Mode cover

The Animals at Night and Brent Amaker – Personal Jesus from Marlon Schaeffer on Vimeo.

Friday night the Crocodile hosted a night of Depeche Mode covers and several of Guerrilla Candy’s favorite locals put their own spin on DM classics to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. And while there were plenty of excellent efforts, the highlight had to be Brent Amaker and the Animals at Night’s take on “Personal Jesus”

Now Brent Amaker could’ve taken the easy way out with this cover by giving it the Johnny Cash treatment since Amaker’s voice is often compared to the Man in Black, but Brent seized possession of the song and made it 100 percent his own and in the process created an amazing cover.

Of course since we all know Brent Amaker does a good job of putting his own spin on classics it should have come as no surprise that his rendition of the Violator standout would bring the house down. From the direct vocal delivery that sounds like one of Satan’s minions performing spoken word, to the highly effective use of a Bible as a prop (knowing Mr. Amaker it likely had a flask of whiskey hidden somewhere inside of its pages), to the demonically arresting laughter during the breakdown, this is by far the best Depeche Mode cover you will ever hear.
