Listen: New Mark Lenagen ‘Burning Jacob’s Ladder’

Mark Lanegan – Burning Jacob’s Ladder

For the past few weeks in the dark corners of the musical Interwebs there have been whispers about an upcoming solo record from Mark Lanegan (what other corners would you expect to find Lanegan?). However, nothing official has been confirmed and no music has been made public which has made a new album from the former Screaming Trees frontman more myth than reality.

That all changed today when a new Lanegan song called “Burning Jacob’s Ladder” was released for download on the website for the upcoming videogame Rage. It’s definitely a strange spot for a new Lanegan song to pop up but Lanegan seems like a pretty strange guy so it sort of makes sense.

As for the track itself, it carries all of the trademark qualities of Lanegan’s music. It’s slightly dark with a smoky gothic vibe and Lanegan’s unmistakably deep, devilish voice is in fine form. If it’s any indicator of what to expect from the rest of Lanegan’s expected solo album the record could be his best since 1994’s Whiskey For The Holy Ghost.

About that upcoming solo record, there’s no word on an exact release date for the album other than that it’s scheduled for a “tentative fall 2011” release according to Rage’s website. Rage hits shelves Sept. 13 which could be a small clue into the exact release date for Lanegan’s currently untitled effort.

You can listen to the track above and download it over on Rage’s website.

  1. Damn. Best Lanegan song in a decades. I’ve enjoyed most of his country tinged mellow stuff over the years, but always liked him better with powerful rock accompaniment. This song definitely fits that bill. Hope it is a sign of things to come.
