Last week Blue Scholars broke the news that they were ditching the traditional record label release model for their upcoming Cinemetropolis and decided to start a Kickstarter campaign asking for $25,000 in 46 days to fund the album. Today the group announced that since the fundraising campaign was launched on March 6, more than 1,000 fans have pledged nearly $30,000 to support the album.

The record is scheduled to be released in June (no official date has been announced) and fans who donated to the cause will receive a variety of bonuses depending on their level of support ranging from advance copies of the album before its street date to thank you shout outs in the album’s liner notes. As of noon a total of 1,012 people have pledged $29,523 toward CinemetropolisThe Kickstarter campaign will continue until April 21 and fans can still pledge money to Cinemetropolis and receive the bonuses.

The group has ambitious plans for the album and plans to work with filmmakers to create mini-movies for each song off the cinema-influenced record. So far the only plans that have been made public involve a video for the Seattle-centric, Sonics-themed “Slick Watts” made by the folks at Sonicsgate. All money raised from the Kickstarter campaign will go towards distribution, marketing and other Cinemetropolis-related projects such as the aforementioned videos.

“It feels great to know that our album is on its way to the public, and instead of worrying about who is going to finance and execute its marketing and distribution, we can focus 100-percent on creative projects and scheduling tour dates,” said Blue Scholars MC Geologic.
