Shabazz Palaces scores film, delays new album

Shabazz Palaces "Black Up"
Looks like we are all going to have to wait a little bit longer for the debut full-length album from the mysteriously cool Shabazz Palaces.

Sub Pop announced this morning that the release date for the band’s first LP, Black Up, has been pushed back to June 28. The album was previously due out May 31.

The change in date isn’t because the group’s been slacking and needs more time to complete the record. By all accounts the album is complete from what I hear. Not only has Shabazz finished the record, the group also created the score for a documentary called Tough Bond. The film is about kids sniffing glue to survive street life in Kenya’s disappearing villages and exploding urban slums. The trailer for the doc is below and it features the Shabazz song “Blast It” which is from the score.

The group will celebrate the release of Black Out with a free in-store set at Easy Street Records in Lower Queen Anne on June 28 and shows on June 30 and July 1 at Neumos. Both Neumos shows cost $15 and start at 8 p.m. You can download the first single from the album, “An Echo From the Hosts that Profess Infinitum,” for free over here.
