Guerrilla Candy named best new website by SPJ

Guerrilla Candy was named best new website by the Society of Professional Journalists.

The award was announced at SPJ’s annual Northwest Excellence in Journalism banquet which was held at Safeco Field on Saturday.

At the banquet SPJ honored the best in journalism for the five-state region of Montana, Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. More than 2,500 entries were received for multiple categories that recognized work in print, broadcast and online journalism. Entries were rated a reviewed by panels of out-of-state judges.

Guerrilla Candy contributor Steven Friederich was also honored at the banquet. Friederich was awarded second place in the arts and entertainment writing category for an article he wrote for the Aberdeen Daily World.

This is the third first place SPJ trophy for Guerrilla Candy founder Travis Hay. In 2008 his Seattle P-I reader blog, then called Ear Candy, was named best specialized blog. In 2010 Hay was awarded first place in the online arts, entertainment and lifestyle writing category for his previous website, also called Ear Candy, which was later rebuilt and rebranded into the site you’re reading today.

We here at Guerrilla Candy are honored that SPJ judges again considered works of journalism done here on a volunteer basis, for no compensation, to be as legitimate as works created by media outlets with paid staff members. And we are also honored to win this award as an independent media organization.
