Local shows to be thankful for this week

It’s the day before Thanksgiving, which more or less makes it a Friday for those who don’t have to work the day after Turkey Day. This also means it’s time to give thanks, and for the Seattle music scene there’s plenty to be thankful for in regards to shows happening this holiday weekend. Here are some choice shows well worth checking out in the coming days.

Tonight: Brent Amaker and the Rodeo, Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground and Vox Mod at the Triple Door (8 p.m., $15)

A Rodeo show is always a fun event and tonight BAR will be at the swanky Triple Door, which should make for some extra special pre-Thanksgiving merriment. As an added bonus The Rodeo will be performing with the vaudevillian pop outfit Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground and Vox Mod will be mixing up some tunes for all to enjoy.

Tonight: Sportin’ Life’s 10-year Anniversary Party with Fly Moon Royalty, Spac3man, Nissim (formerly D. Black), Fatal Lucciauno, Larry Hawkins and Davey Jones, Marissa and special guest DJ at Barboza (8 p.m., $10)

Sportin’ Life Records is responsible for some of the best hip-hop to come out of Seattle and tonight the label will celebrate its 10-year anniversary with a huge  party at Barboza. The bill features the human cartoon that is Spac3man, 2012 breakout R&B/hip-hoppers Fly Moon Royalty, Nissim (who you likely know as D. Black), Fatal Lucciauno and the rest of the Sportin’ Life family.

Nov. 23-25: Brandi Carlile with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra at Benaroya Hall (8 p.m., $67 – $117)

Brandi Carlile ‘s Bear Creek is the best album of her career and that’s saying a lot because 2007’s The Story (which was produced by T Bone Burnett) and 2009’s Give Up the Ghost (which was produced by Rick Rubin) are both terrific. She performed with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra twice back in 2010 and released an excellent live album that documents the shows (check out her “Forever Young” cover). This year she’ll perform with the symphony three times with the third performance being an all-acoustic set.

Nov. 24 Reignwolf, The Young Evils and the Grizzled Mighty at the Neptune (8 p.m., $12)

No local musician this side of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis is having a bigger 2012 than Jordan Cook, aka Reignwolf. His blues-rock guitar assault is something that simply must be experienced live. He’ll be playing his first major local headlining show at the Neptune on Saturday with folksters-turned-rockers The Young Evils and the vicious duo of the Grizzled Mighty.
