Jeff Ament on why The Sonics are important to Pearl Jam

Yesterday the news broke that the Seattle Supersonics are more than likely going to return to the Emerald City. It’s sort of a big deal.

You see, back in the ’90s music and hoops were a big part of the local culture in Seattle. And there was no bigger band in Seattle during the decade of flannel than Pearl Jam (well, okay, there was that other band too). If you are old enough to remember the Jock Jams basketball games on MTV then you probably remember seeing Jeff Ament on the court with Eric from The Real World and maybe Dennis Rodman, Mugsy Bogues or some other random NBA star from the era when MTV actually played videos.

Jeff Ament is a huge basketball fan and there’s always been a connection between Pearl Jam and the Sonics. Above is an outtake from the excellent documentary Sonicsgate where Jeff Ament explains why the Sonics are an important part of Pearl Jam history.
