Pearl Jam recording with Incubus’ Mike Einziger

An interesting tidbit of news leaked out onto the Internet last night when Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger sent out a tweet about his recent time in the studio. More specifically, his time in the studio with Eddie Vedder.

He tweeted that he was “recording strings for Pearl Jam’s new album,” which is news because 1) he isn’t a member of Pearl Jam and 2) very little is known about Pearl Jam’s upcoming 10th studio album.

Pearl Jam already utilizes two guitarists (three if Eddie picks up a guitar) so it’s likely Einziger is literally playing strings, meaning a cello or some other stringed instrument since the band has worked with string sections in the past (see 2009’s Backspacer and other PJ records). There are conflicting reports for when the band’s new album will be released with guitarist Mike McCready saying it will see the light of day by the end of the year while guitarist Stone Gossard and Rolling Stone suggesting a release date of some time in 2014. Nobody knows what the new material sounds like, but one reliable fan site has reported on a few demos in case you want to read about, and not hear, new music from Pearl Jam.

Meanwhile, the band is gearing up to play a few shows in South America later this month and will perform at Wrigley Field in Chicago in July. The band said a fall tour announcement is expected in the “coming months” when the Wrigley shows was announced in January so look for tour news soon.
