Today in news that really, really sucks, Matt Cameron announced he’s stepping down as drummer for Pearl Jam. He shared the news in an Instagram post Monday morning. In his statement Cameron gave no reason for his departure.
Cameron was the band’s fifth drummer, with Dave Krusen, Matt Chamberlin, Dave Abbruzzese and Jack Irons preceeding him.
During his time in Pearl Jam Cameron played in several side projects including but not limited to Ten Commandos, The Wellwater Conspiracy, Harrybu McCage, Drumgasm, Is This Real? and 3rd Secret. He also released two solo albums and an EP with Shaina Shepherd. He contributed to every Pearl Jam album of this century and prior to Pearl Jam he was the drummer for Soundgarden, Skin Yard, Bam Bam, Hater and Temple of the Dog among other bands.
Pearl Jam released the following statement:
From being one of our first musical heroes in the bands Skinyard and the mighty Soundgarden, to playing on our first demos in 1990, Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer.
He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music.
We love you Matt.
