Retro sounds with a modern take: Glitterfox’s ‘Decoder’

Portland buzz band Glitterfox blends bits of ’80s new wave, classic Americana and good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll on its debut full-length album “Decoder,” resulting in a a cohesive sound that is distinctly its own. Pair the group’s genre (and decade) hopping sound with the voice of singer Solange Igoa, who at times is a dead ringer for Stevie Nicks, and you’ve got yourself the recipe for a band that should go far.

Igoa and their former spouse guitarist Andrea Walker are the creative core of the band. While Ioga’s voice is front and center, Walker makes their presence known throughout the album as well. From the blasting guitar lick of “Gamma Ray” to a ripping solo on “Change Me” that elevates an otherwise melancholy song, the deft guitar work doesn’t go unnoticed.

Prior to “Decoder” the band released a series of singles and put them together on the compilation “Highway Forever.” That record was a good indication of what was to come, but it sounded slightly disjointed due to its nature of being a collection of singles. “Decoder,” the band’s proper debut album, is a confident piece of work that will hopefully introduce the band to a wider audience thanks to the musical chemistrey between Ioga and Walker and the group’s perfect blending of styles.
