For Your Consideration: SEACATS

For Your Consideration is a semi-regular feature on Guerrilla Candy that looks at the lesser-knowns of the local music community

I was first exposed to the delightful, indie pop of SEACATS during last year’s EMPSFM Sound Off! competition.

I was a judge for the first round of the contest SEACATS participated in and the band instantly won me over with their catchy hooks, infectious energy and a set of songs that was just downright fun. They placed at the top of my ballot but ultimately lost that round of the contest to eventual Sound Off! winners Great Waves. Since Sound Off! SEACATS, who hail from the small town of Kelso, Wash., have released an EP, performed at Bumbershoot and rocked more than 70 shows in an effort to perfect their craft.

Not only does SEACATS’ make good music (seriously, listen to the clip of “Whoa Whoa Whoa Yeah Yeah Yeah” above and tell me that isn’t a gem of an earworm) and its diminutive bassist rock a Hoffner, but they’ve got good senses of humor too, as evidenced by the clever Kickstarter video they created campaigning for funds to finish their new album. That’s right, the band is currently working on pressing and mastering their new album and they need your help to get it done.

The SEACATS have created a Kickstarter campaign to get the record financed and as of 7:00 p.m. Feb. 7 they are $110 shy of their $1,500 goal. They have four more days to reach their goal otherwise they will lose all $1,390 raised thus far so head on over to Kickstarter and watch their clever, self-produced video about the album and donate to the cause. I would put my money where my mouth is myself but unfortunately as an unemployed music journalist I don’t have a whole lot of spare change to be throwing around which is where you come into play.

But just in case you aren’t convinced SEACATS is the right band for you after one listen to “Whoa Whoa Whoa Yeah Yeah Yeah” you can hit up the band’s Bandcamp page and sample their entire discography. I know the word discography sounds intimidating, but really it’s only three EPs so don’t be afraid to give the music a listen. Trust me, it’s good and well worth your time.

After giving the band’s music a listen you can check out SEACATS live Friday night at Hard Rock Seattle where they compete in the Hard Rock Battle of the Bands (9 p.m. $7 adv, $10 DOS) where they will battle it out against Fox and the Law, Hot Bodies in Motion (another Guerrilla Candy favorite), Mad Silence and Chance McKinney n’ CrossWire.
