Tonight: Grieves & Budo CD release at Neumos

Benjamin Laub, aka Grieves celebrates the release of his new album Together/Apart tonight at Neumos with a bill that features Mr. Lif, Type and Sapient ($12, 8 p.m.).

The record is his first for seminal underground hip-hop label Rhymesayers which is the perfect label for a rapper like Grieves. His introspective rhymes and commanding charisma and swagger while on stage fits right in with the likes of Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Blueprint and others.

Of course a good MC can’t go too far without having a solid DJ and producer holding things down, so enter Grieves’ good friend Budo who contributes instrumentation throughout the record and the pairing is like musical peanut butter and chocolate.  Or, to keep things in the Rhymesayers mentality, think of them as Seattle’s own Slug and Ant.

Tonight’s CD release celebration is Grieves’ last local show before beginning a summer-long trek with Vans Warped Tour so catch Grieves now or wait until Aug. 13 to see him at the Gorge. You can listen to a stream of Together/Apart over on AOL music
