The Silversun Pickups sure do seem to like Seattle. Or at least they like themselves a Seattle media blitz.
As mentioned last week, the group recently dropped its new record Neck of the Woods and SSPU’s Brian Aubert and Nikki Monninger performed two free shows in town to support the album. Adding to their local promotional tour, Aubert and Monninger will co-host Marco Collins’ Top 20 local songs countdown on Jet City Stream. The pair are quite hilarious so I am sure their banter will make for some great online radio on a Friday afternoon.
The countdown, which airs Fridays at 3 p.m., is a relatively new show for Jet City Stream and it is a great way to get exposure to local music. Each week Collins, who is the station’s director of artist development, uses record sales numbers, requests and other metrics to determine the top 20 local songs on the station and has a co-host help him count down the list on-air in the studio. Previous co-hosts include Abbey Simmons from Sound on the Sound and the station’s music director Shawn Stewart. Next week Mike Herrera from MxPx will co-host.
Full disclosure, I was fortunate enough to co-host Collins’ first local music countdown on Jet City Stream a few weeks ago. I had a blast sitting in the studio chatting and gossiping with Marco about Seattle’s amazing music community. Like many of my peers and readers, I grew up in Seattle listening to Marco on 107.7 The End and the songs he chose to spin on the radio helped shape my musical tastes so it was quite a treat to spend time in a studio with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame DJ. Back to the countdown. Like I said, it is a great way to catch up on what’s hot in local music and it’s a good way to hear great local artists that you might not on the FM airwaves.
