Listen: Courtney Barnett covers Chastity Belt

Chastity Belt, aka the best thing to come out of Walla Walla since sweet onions, are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut record “No Regrets” with a vinyl reissue which will be out Aug. 11 on venerable local label Suicide Squeeze Records.

The band received loads of critical acclaim when the album was originally released and that led to national tours, coveted festival slots and a record deal with Sub Pop imprint Hardly Art. Those tours included dates with Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett and alt-country adjacent indie favorite Kurt Vile.

To help celebrate the decade since Chastity Belt’s breakthrough, Suicide Squeeze is releasing a split 7″ of Chastity Belt covers by Vile and Barnett. Vile covers “This Time Of Night,” off the band’s 2017 record “I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone” and Barnett takes on “Different Now” off the same album.

While Vile’s cover has yet to be heard, today Suicide Squeeze released Barnett’s version of “Different Now” into the world.

Barnett had this to say about the cover:

“This song is so special to me. I remember when the album came out and I listened to ‘different now’ over and over, I thought they were singing directly to me. It’s a perfect piece of songwriting, I showed it to Kurt and he would always sing it to me on tour. I love Chastity Belt. I’m pretty sure we met in 2014 at a record store in Seattle, then we toured together in 2015 and we’ve been friends ever since.

I originally played it as a little folk acoustic version, then I asked Stella [Mozgawa] to program some drums and it turned into something a lot more fun. Wwe tracked straight to the Tascam 388 and it was a real joy to make.”

The “This Time of Night / Different Now” split 7″ will be released Oct. 27 and is available to pre-order.

You can take a listen to Barnett’s cover, as well as the original, below.
